We flew north for a few days to experience the wonders of San Francisco! We didn't realize we would be getting a workout at the same time. Ok...everyone knows SF is known for it's hills but this was more than we expected. Walking 10-20 blocks in Chicago is tiring enough but going just a few in SF is like running a marathon in comparison (that may be a bit of an exaggeration but you get the point). Don't get me wrong, we loved the city. It just wasn't a relaxing vacation at all.

We got up the first morning and walked 13 blocks to Bob's Donuts! We had heard they were to die for and they were right. A quick cable car ride and we were down at Union Square seeing the sights! Lunch (The Stinking Rose) and a power nap and we were off to Fisherman's Warf and Ghirardelli Square. This turned out to be the only time we would see the Golden Gate Bridge. It's a bit far to walk to so we decided we would wait till the next day and ride the bus to the bridge then.
We actually got to the base of the bridge and still couldn't see it because the fog was so thick! The black and white photo to the right is a picture of the bridge...it's just covered by fog.

We did the night tour of Alcatraz and really enjoyed it. It was so interesting to hear the stories and horrors of the island. Below is a video of the cell doors closing. Pretty creepy! The tour lasted about 2 1/2 hours and we only wish we could have done it during the day light too.

For as tired as we were, we did really enjoy ourselves. It certainly felt good to be back on our own bed though.
P.S. Nick was disappointed we didn't have any Rice-A-Roni.
So glad you had a good time. The hills are UNBELIEVABLE to walk, and a challenge to drive in a rental car (no left turns allowed!), . . . my leg muscles hurt like crazy after a couple of days, but WOW what a cool city. I can't wait to see all of your pictures. I enjoyed perusing through my two San Fran. albums to email you before your trip. See you in a few days!!
